My primary role at Tribal was to create a marketing microsite for the Volkswagen Passat CC, with an accompanying touchscreen application and a matching iPhone app. The touchscreen application was deployed on large screens in exhibition stands at 4 major shopping centres across the UK. The iPhone app was originally developed in JavaScript inside the PhoneGap framework as proof of concept and for demonstration to the client. On sign-off from the client, I rewrote the application in Cocoa & Objective-C primarily for performance reasons.

I worked at Yell to create a user friendly front-end and user management layer for an open-source web analytics platform, available to over 25,000 Yell customers. The application featured an extensive API which was used by both the application itself internally, but also in an iOS dashboard. In addition I created a client-side UI layer for an internal toolkit application, and set up project management software and a continuous integration server using Jenkins.

I worked with web hack-star Syd Lawrence as iOS developer on this music application for ShareMyPlaylists.com. Primary responsibilities involved integration of 3rd party cocoa libraries (cocoaspotifylib, sharekit) and wrapping that functionality in PhoneGap plugins. In the case of ShareKit we needed to make some in depth changes in order to support the ‘Open in Spotify …’ functionality.

West End Studios came to me with an idea for an application for allowing companies to demonstrate their web content offline without needing to create a specific app for it. I took an existing open-source library (SESpringboard) and used it as the basis for the application; although I found that it did some of what I wanted to achieve (an iOS springboard-like interface), it didn’t support orientation changes or iPad - I extended it to support those elements and pushed it back to GitHub.

Summary The elevator pitch is that I’m a veteran digital developer, having started in the industry in 1997. Over 2010-2012 I transitioned from full-stack web development to full time iOS development.
In 2014 I was asked to be CTO of startup Firef.ly by former head of UX at Sapient Nitro. We raised around £750k from a mixture of an Innovate UK grant and Seedrs.com campaign, and began full time development in Swift in January 2015.
